Ductile Iron Pipe Guide

The strong, long-lived metal pipe used for water mains, fire lines and heavy-duty crossings, and how it is installed and protected.

Ductile iron is a tough, flexible cast iron that can take high pressure and heavy loads. Utilities use it for water mains, fire lines, force mains and crossings where strength matters. It is heavy, so installing it takes equipment, but it is known for a long service life.

Joints are usually push-on gaskets or mechanical joints, and fittings are heavy iron with restraint to resist pressure. Soil can corrode iron, so pipe is often wrapped in polyethylene encasement or coated, and tracer wire or locating methods are used since metal pipe is easier to find with a locator.

Best for

  • Water mains and fire lines
  • Hydrant leads
  • Force mains
  • Heavy traffic crossings

How we handle it

  • Correct class and lining
  • Restraint at all bends
  • Polyethylene encasement where specified
  • Pressure tested before cover

Keep in mind

  • Heavy and costly to handle
  • Corrodes without protection
  • Needs restraint at fittings

Questions

Ductile Iron Pipe FAQ

Why use ductile iron instead of PVC?

For high pressure, heavy loads or utility specs that require it. PVC is common for smaller lines.

Does ductile iron rust?

It can corrode in aggressive soil, so wraps and coatings protect it.

How do you cut it?

With saws or cutters designed for iron, and we prepare the cut ends for the joint.
