PVC Pipe for Water and Sewer Guide

The most common modern underground pipe: where PVC is the right choice, how it is joined and what keeps it working for decades.

PVC is the workhorse of modern underground piping. It is light, smooth inside, resistant to corrosion and available in sizes for everything from a house sewer to a large water main. White and green sewer pipe, blue water pipe and gray conduit are all PVC in different forms.

It performs well when it is bedded properly and joined correctly. Gasketed joints on mains allow for movement and seal tightly, while solvent-welded joints on smaller lines need clean, dry surfaces and the right cement. Sunlight and impact damage it before it is buried, so we store and handle it with care.
