Valve and Meter Vault Installation

Precast vaults, large meters, backflow assemblies and isolation valves set below ground for commercial and multi-unit properties.

Larger properties do not use a simple meter box. They use vaults: concrete structures that hold large meters, backflow preventers and valves below grade where they are protected from traffic and weather. Setting one correctly takes heavy equipment and careful measuring.

We excavate for the vault, build a compacted stone base, set the precast structure at the right elevation and connect the piping inside. Hatches and lids are set to final grade so they do not become trip hazards or collect water, and piping is supported so the weight does not pull on the vault walls.

A level foundation

Precast vaults are heavy and unforgiving. A firm, level stone base and careful setting prevent cracked joints and rocking lids over the life of the structure.

Piping and supports

Large valves and meters are heavy. Pipe supports, restrained joints and wall seals keep stress off the vault and keep water out.

Access and safety

Vaults are confined spaces. We place ladders, hatches and drains with later service crews in mind, so they can work safely.

Confined space safety

Vaults are confined spaces, and anyone entering needs the right training and equipment. We design access and ventilation so later crews can work safely, and we do not enter vaults without proper procedures.

Questions

Valve and Meter Vaults FAQ

Do you supply the vault?

We can supply or install vaults provided by the project. Precast structures are ordered to the engineer drawings and lead times vary.

Do vaults need a drain?

Many do. Where allowed, we plan a drain or sump so water does not stay in the vault.

Who installs the backflow assembly?

Backflow assemblies often need a qualified tester or installer. We build the vault and piping and coordinate with that provider.

Can a vault be added to an existing line?

Yes. It involves a shutdown and a tie-in, and we schedule it with the utility to limit downtime.

Can anyone enter a vault?

No. Confined space rules apply. Only trained crews with proper equipment should enter.
