Stormwater Detention and Inlets

Detention basins, outlet structures and inlets that hold back runoff from new development and release it at a safe rate.

When a field becomes a parking lot, rain that used to soak into the soil runs off all at once. Stormwater detention catches that surge in a basin or underground chamber and lets it out slowly, so downstream streets and neighbors are not flooded.

We build detention basins, outlet structures, inlets and underground chambers to the approved storm design. Earthwork is shaped to the elevations, outlet structures are set precisely to control the release rate, pipes are connected and slopes are stabilized with stone and vegetation. Erosion control stays in place until the site is stable.

Outlets control release

The outlet structure is the heart of the basin. Its openings and elevations are set by the engineer, and we place them to the inch.

Shape and slopes

Basin bottoms, side slopes and berms are shaped to the grading plan. Overly steep sides erode, and overly flat bottoms hold water where it should drain.

Erosion control

New slopes erode quickly in a storm. Silt fence, stone and seeding protect them until grass takes hold.

Inspect after storms

Detention basins need a quick look after big storms. Check the outlet for debris and the slopes for erosion, and fix small problems before the next storm.

Compacted backfill, grading, sod or paving repair and a walk-through with you.

Questions

Stormwater Detention FAQ

Do you design stormwater systems?

No. An engineer designs them. We build from the approved plans and tell you when field conditions differ.

Does a detention pond always hold water?

Dry basins drain between storms. Wet ponds are designed to hold water, and the plan shows which you have.

Who maintains the basin afterward?

The owner or association is usually responsible. We can show you what to inspect and when.

Can detention be underground?

Yes. Underground chambers or pipe systems are common where land is tight.

How do I maintain a detention basin?

Keep the outlet clear, mow the slopes and repair erosion promptly.
