We handle the call to 811, coordinate with the utilities and make sure every line is marked before anyone digs.
Before any digging, the law and common sense say the same thing: call 811. The one-call center notifies the utilities, and they send crews to mark their lines. It takes a few working days and costs nothing, and it prevents many of the most dangerous accidents in the trade.
We make the call for our own projects and help you with yours. We confirm the ticket covers the whole work area, check that every utility responded, walk the site to compare marks with the plans and flag lines that are unmarked or that look wrong. Private lines, such as those serving sheds, wells and lights, are not marked by the public utilities, and we help find those too.
The ticket has a waiting period and an expiry. We time the call so the marks are in place before work and keep the ticket current for longer jobs.
Public marking stops at the meter. Irrigation, landscape lighting, gas lines to grills and power to outbuildings may not be marked. We use locating equipment and records to find them.
Colors mean different utilities, and a hand-dug margin on each side of the mark is the usual practice. We follow the marks closely and pothole where lines cross the work.
An 811 ticket does not last indefinitely. For longer projects, the ticket must be renewed before it expires, and new areas need new tickets. We keep track so the marks stay valid.
